Tennis FAQ

Can I join a tennis coaching programme without becoming a member?

For those new to tennis, we make the offer that you can join the coaching programme for one block without joining the club, but thereafter we require all those on a coaching programme to become members. This includes all juniors over 5 years old on the Mini tennis Red, Orange and Green programmes.

Does tennis membership mean I can use the fitness suite?

No, the tennis club membership and Fitness suite membership are completely separate. You can join either separate from the other or take advantage of our 'club' membership. You can also 'pay as you go' to use the fitness suite.

How can I find other people to play with?

The Club Captain organises Adult Club nights on Wednesday and Thursday evenings in summer and Thursday evenings in winter from 6.30pm when all levels of ability will be catered for and members will be encouraged to join in with groups of a similar level of play. Just turn up and join in. Other events are organised and advertised on the notice board – again just sign up and join in.

For juniors, one of the coaches organises family night on Friday evenings during summer season. A small charge is made for the evening to cover the cost of the coach and lights.

What do I need to wear?

Any recognised tennis clothing and shoes would be suitable. To prevent damage to the courts, trainers with ridged or studded soles are not permitted.

The Club is able offer the full range of Wilson racquets, balls and equipment at very competitive prices – ask any of the coaches who will be happy to advise you on racquet sales.

What is Pay to Play?

This allows newcomers to tennis, or people who like to play now and again, the opportunity to just 'pay to play' tennis without becoming a member. You can call the club and ask to book a court at any time, however priority for court bookings will be given to members

Membership Questions

Who can I ask about Membership and Social Events ?

The receptionist can help you with most enquiries – telephone 01484 687160. Any of the Coaching Team can help you with coaching enquiries – phone numbers are on the coaches page. The Social events calendar is also enclosed and generally entry forms are displayed on the notice boards prior to the event. Also any of the Committee members can help you with your enquiries.

What about Membership ?

Membership is open to all and the various categories are detailed on the form. The Club also requires all those taking part in coaching to become members so that they can benefit from all the facilities that the Club has to offer. This includes all juniors on the Mini Tennis Red, Orange and Green programmes.

For those new to tennis, we make the offer that you can join the coaching programme for one block without joining the Club, but thereafter, we require all those on the coaching programme to become members.

What happens after I join and I turn up to play outdoors ?

Access to the Clubhouse is via the main entrance to the club house.

When are the outdoor courts available ?

When the courts are all in use, or people are waiting to play, one short set (tie-break at 5 all) should be played.

Members have unrestricted access to the courts except for:

  • Monday and Tuesday Summer evenings when ladies’ and mens’ league matches are played
  • Friday evening when Juniors have priority on family night courts
  • Courts previously booked for coaching purposes. Please consult the club notice board
  • Courts needed on previously published weekend days for
National League matches (four singles followed by two doubles matches – FOUR COURTS)
Yorkshire League (nine doubles matches – THREE COURTS)
and Yorkshire Veterans League matches (four doubles matches – TWO COURTS)
  • Courts needed for previously published events such as Club Tournaments

The diary in the clubhouse should list all the dates when the courts are required for matches or coaching. When courts are required for matches, team managers or captains should write the dates in the diary so that all members are aware of when matches or competitions are taking part.

Can I bring a friend to play who is not a member ?

Any member wishing to introduce a non-member to the Club shall, upon entering the premises, sign the name(s) in the visitor’s book. The introducing member shall be responsible for ensuring that a visitor’s fee of £5.00 is paid. NO VISITOR SHALL BE ALLOWED TO PLAY MORE THAN 5 TIMES PER SEASON. Only senior and intermediate members may introduce visitors and they shall be held responsible for their visitors.

Do I have to pay extra to hire a court ?

No, not if it is outdoors apart from if floodlights are required.

Coaching will now occupy more time on the indoor courts in the summer due to additional courses especially for adult beginners and improvers. Therefore, the indoor courts will NOT generally be available for Club evenings or for completion of matches.

Members and Non members can book the indoor courts by contacting the Club reception on 01484 687160. Court costs are currently £18.00 per hour (£14.00 per hour off-peak) for members, non members have to pay an additional visitor's fee of £5.00 each. Courts can be booked up to 7 days in advance and payment should be made to reception at the time of booking. Pre booked courts must still be paid for even if the booking is not taken up - unless notification of cancellation is received a minimum of 24 hours in advance.

There is an indoor walk on rate for members which is £9.00 at all times. Walk on rate applicable to courts available up to 5 minutes prior to play. No prebooking allowed. At peak demand, list to be kept of those waiting for walk on court.

Box league rate for members is £7.00 per hour at all time. Again you can book 7 days in advance and if not used, full payment must be made.

Details of indoor block bookings for the following winter will be sent out during June when courts will be allocated either by ballot or application to be decided by the Committee.

What about floodlights on the outdoor courts ?

The cost of the lights are £5.00 per hour per court for all outdoor courts, both for juniors and seniors. The floodlights automatically come on 2 minutes before the time the court is booked for.

Can I learn to play tennis to a better standard ?

The Club runs a full coaching programme for everyone, adults and children, from beginners to team players. Details can be downloaded here
