Northumberland Open: A great week on and off the court
Heading north for the annual Northumberland Open G3 Tournament, a super group of our junior players faced a week packed with tennis, team spirit and what turned out to be some excellent performances.
As the week began, it was clear to see that there would be plenty of highlights on court as Ben reached the 18&U singles final, showing impressive calmness and confidence throughout the tournament. Ben went on to enjoy a strong run in the 16&U event, making the semi-finals and showing awesome skills to be proud of!
Next up, Oscar, who battled his way to victory in the consolation final, defeating the seventh seed 13-11 in a thrilling match tie-break. He also made a strong start in the 16&U competition and earned the unofficial award for the quickest serve of the trip!
Elliot, meanwhile, recorded one of the standout results of the week, defeating the number five seed in the 18&U singles 6-2, 7-5 in what was undoubtedly one of his best performances to date. Never one to be rushed through his morning routine (😂), his steady approach played out well!
Step up Ethan, who produced an excellent win over the number two seed on his way to the quarter-finals of the 16&U singles and enjoyed a successful doubles campaign alongside Oscar, making the semi-finals with impressive teamwork. He was also responsible for one of the biggest shots of the tournament, striking a remarkable forehand winner down the line. Shot, Ethan!
It didn’t stop there, Andrei played some outstanding tennis, including a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 victory in the 18&U draw before eventually coming up against the third seed. He produced what many were calling the “shot of the week” in the doubles, despite rolling his ankle during the point. Thankfully, he recovered quickly and was soon back in action!
Carrying an ongoing pelvic issue, ultimate respect goes to Harry, who despite the pain he was managing, showed tremendous determination throughout the tournament, competing bravely and never backing away from a challenge. Impressive work Harry, you are an incredible player with superb tenacity. Nice guy too!
In the 14&U event, Guy reached the quarter-finals, eventually losing to the player who went on to finish runner-up. A determined fighter, he pushed his opponent hard, particularly in a closely fought opening set that was settled by a tie-break. With energy still in the tank, Guy teamed up with Deyvon to reach the 14&U doubles final. What a team!
Meanwhile, Deyvon enjoyed a fantastic week, winning the 14&U singles title without dropping a set and conceding just 14 games throughout the tournament. He also remained in contention for further success in both the doubles and 16&U singles events. What an incredible tournament and great wins!
While the results were impressive, perhaps the most pleasing feedback received throughout the week was about the behaviour of the team. All of our young players demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, respect and maturity both on and off the court, representing Thongsbridge brilliantly throughout the tournament, something that made coaches Nick and Shaun incredibly proud.
A special thank you also goes to Nick, who once again organised and led the trip. The Northumberland Open has become a fantastic opportunity for our juniors to test themselves against strong opposition, gain valuable tournament experience and, just as importantly, spend time together as a team.
Well done to everyone involved for a memorable and successful week. A few snaps, courtesy of Shaun, to sum up the week!
